5 Signs Your Pet May Be Dehydrated (And How to Fix It!)

A brown puppy with blue eyes and a teal collar drinks from a metal bowl on a gravel surface. The background is blurred and dark.

We all know how important it is to stay hydrated–especially on hot days or after a workout. But did you know that your furry friend needs just as much attention when it comes to hydration? Dehydration in pets can sneak up fast, and if left unchecked (even for short periods), it can lead to some serious health issues.

So…how can you tell if your pet isn’t drinking enough water? Here are five telltale signs of dehydration in pets and some easy ways to fix the problem before it gets serious!

Key Pet Dehydration Signs

  1. Their Skin Isn’t Snapping Back

One of the easiest ways to check if your pet is dehydrated is the skin elasticity test (fancy, right?). Just pinch a little loose skin between their shoulder blades, lift it up, and let go. If it snaps back quickly, they’re well-hydrated. If it takes its sweet time going back to normal, your fur baby may be low on fluids. Time to fill that water dish!

  1. Dry or Sticky Gums and Nose

A healthy pet should have a moist nose and gums. If your pet’s gums feel dry or sticky instead of smooth and slick, it’s a sign they need more hydration. Thick or pasty saliva is another clue that your pet is running low on good ol’ H2O. Give them a drink, and keep an eye on their water intake.

  1. Sunken or Dull-Looking Eyes

A pet’s eyes should be bright, clear, and (in the case of my puppy) full of mischief. If their eyes look sunken, tired, or just a little “off,” dehydration could be to blame. This happens when the body starts pulling moisture from less essential areas (like the eyes) to keep vital organs running. Not good! If you notice this, it’s time to up their water game.

  1. Low Energy Levels & Weakness

Is your normally rambunctious pup suddenly acting like they pulled an all-nighter binge-watching Puppy TV? Lethargy and weakness are common signs of dehydration. When pets don’t have enough fluids, their blood flow slows down, making them feel sluggish. If your pet seems unusually tired or wobbly, dehydration could be the culprit.

  1. Loss of Appetite & Excessive Panting

Not drinking enough water can zap your pet’s appetite, and excessive panting can make dehydration even worse. If your pet is skipping meals or panting more than usual–especially in warm weather–it’s time to pull into the hydration station!

How to Keep Your Pet Hydrated (and Happy!)

If you suspect your pet is dehydrated, don’t panic! Here are some simple ways to help them rehydrate and keep their water intake on track:

Always Provide Fresh Water: Unlike you, pets can’t run on iced coffee and a dream. Keep their water bowl full and clean. (Nobody likes drinking stale water!) Try adding ice cubes for a little extra refreshment.

Upgrade to a Pet Water Fountain: Some pets love moving water. A pet fountain can make hydration more fun and encourage them to drink more.

Switch to Wet Food: Wet food has a higher moisture content than kibble, making it an easy way to sneak in extra hydration.

Offer a Portable Water Bottle: If you and your pet are always on the go, a pet-friendly water bottle ensures they stay hydrated wherever you may roam.

Use Electrolyte Solutions: In cases of mild dehydration, a pet-safe electrolyte solution (like Pedialyte) can help restore balance. But always check with your vet first!

Monitor Hydration During Exercise & Hot Weather: Keep an eye on your pet when it’s hot out, and make sure they get water breaks during playtime or long walks.
